SUV stands for "Sport Utility Vehicle". They're not ALL 4x4's. 4x4 means you have an option of using 2 wheel drive, usually the rear 2 wheels, or 4 wheel drive ( using all wheels for traction )

Some SUV's and even passenger autos have 'ALL' wheel drive. So, 4x4 doesn't mean it's 4 wheel drive all the time, but on some it is. Another thing, Sport Utility Vehicles owners rarely take their SUVs on a 4 wheel drive sporting event. One big reason, the suspension isn't beefed up enough to withstand a rugged drive up hills and down the other sides, etc. and the people that use SUVs use them as people used station wagons back in the good old days. The SUV owners/drivers think they're a little bit 'classier' than the average driver anyway.

a 4X4 is any vehicle with four wheel drive. SUV's Sport Utility Vehicles come in boht 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive. So a SUV may be a 4x4, but not necessarily.

I have a truck that has 4-wheel drive, so it's called a 4x4, but it's not a sports utility vehicle (SUV).
